The band’s two founding members first played together in a band called Giant Sand. After a few different lineup changes, Calexico was born, and they recorded their first album entitled Spoke with an independent label called Hausmusik. The band’s second album, The Black Light, talked about the deserts of Arizona and northern Mexico; it was well-received by music critics. Calexico built their following by playing at festivals such as the Hurricane Festival, All Tomorrow’s Parties, and Bonnaroo. They also supported bigger names on tour such as Lambchop, Dirty Three, and Pavement, among others. Calexico introduced different elements to their music in their third album, Hot Rail, but implementing violin and horns. Since then, the band has had a prolific musical career, releasing more albums such as Feast of Wire, Carried to Dust, Garden Ruin, Algiers, and Edge of the Sun. Most recently, they released an album, “Years to Burn” with Iron & Wine.
