Nickel Creek is a three-piece band made up on Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, and Sean Watkins. The Watkins siblings met Chris Thile through a mutual mandolin instructor. They decided to form a band, and their first performance was at a local pizzeria called That Pizza Place in Carlsbad, California. The band released two albums entitled Little Cowpoke and Here to There, but their third, self-titled album helped increase their exposure. Their song “Ode to a Butterfly” won them the award for Best Country Instrumental and the album won them the Best Bluegrass Album award. Nickel Creek went on to modify their sound, adding in more rock and pop influences to their previously bluegrass style with their album Why Should the Fire Die The band later announced via Billboard saying that they would be taking an indefinite break from recording together to expand their horizons as artists. Before their break, the band went on their Farewell (For Now) Tour and appeared the High Sierra Music Festival, Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza, SXSW, Star Fest, and Bonnaroo.
