The Descendents is an American punk rock group that was founded in 1977 by drummer Bill Stevenson, bassist Tony Lombardo, and guitarist Frank Navetta in Manhattan Beach, California. They reemerged as a punk rock band in 1979 after recruiting Stevenson's former classmate Milo Aukerman as a singer, and they quickly rose to prominence in the hardcore punk scene that was then emerging in Los Angeles. Eight studio albums, three live albums, three compilation albums, and four EPs have all been issued by them. Milo Aukerman has been the band's lead vocalist since 1986, together with Stephen Egerton on guitar, Karl Alvarez on bass, and Bill Stevenson on drums. Many contemporary pop punk and skate punk bands, including Blink 182, MXPX, NOFX, Green Day, Pennywise, Propagandhi, Rise Against, The All-American Rejects, The Bouncing Souls, The Offspring, and The Ataris, have acknowledged The Descendents as having had a significant influence on their sound. The first song that truly changed Mark Hoppus' life was "Silly Girl" from "I Don't Want to Grow Up" (1985). Nothing else had ever spoken to him the way it did.
