Compton grew up in Miami, Florida, and started to learn golf when he was 12. Only six years after he started playing he was already the number 1 junior golfer in the United States and AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year. From there, he took a scholarship from the University of Georgia. Compton is a Board of Director for The Erik Compton Foundation. Their mission is to raise awareness of organ donation through medical research, to increase donor education, and develop youth support programs. Compton has been diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy since he was only 9 years old, and has received two heart transplants. Because of this, he has been honored with the Ben Hogan Award in Augusta, Georgia, and the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award from the U.S. Sports Academy. He is also the recipient of the Donate Life Champion awards, which was given to him because he is a role model in the sports community and has inspired others to offer support for organ donation. .
