Washburn speaks Mandarin and performs some songs in that language. She has been given the honor of touring Tibet with Sparrow Quartet, which was something no other American band has ever done. The band also performed at Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. Washington has also worked with Shanghai Restoration Project to create Afterquake a benefit for Sichuan Quake Relief after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. She also has been a TED fellow and the first US-China Center Fellow of Vanderbilt University..
