Lead by guitarist and singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, bassist Jakob Tvilling Pless, drummer Dan Kjaer Nielsen and guitarist Johan Suurballe Wieth, Iceage was created in 2008. Before the quartet started to gain recognition for their music, they had been friends for many years.
After releasing their more mature but yet harsh second album, You're Nothing, the band was signed to a record deal by Matador Records, a well-known indie company. With the release of their third album, Plowing into the Field of Love, via Matador once more, Iceage signaled a change in their artistic approach. The songs became more dynamic and eclectic while retaining a darker side, and horns, keyboards, and acoustic guitars were incorporated into the arrangements. Though they were also influenced by Rønnenfelt's growing side project, Marching Church, with whom he had issued two albums in between Iceage records, the band carried on that path with their following full-length, Beyondless..
