Prior to playing professionally, Ekblad played for the Sun County Panthers minor midget AAA team where he went on to captain the team and lead them to an alliance championship. From there, he became the first defenceman to become an exceptional player and from there, he was competing in the CHL earlier than usual and played for the Barrie Colts in the OHL. During his time in the OHL, Ekblad won the Jack Ferguson Award, the Emms Family Award for Rookie of the Year, and the Max Kaminsky Trophy for Top Defencemen. Ekblad was then selected first overall by the Florida Panthers in the NHL Entry Draft.
