Martin was born in Mullens, West Virginia, and as a child she played in various sports before going on to earn a basketball scholarship from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia where she earned a B.S. in education. She began her boxing career fighting in “Toughwoman” contests and won three consecutive titles. This led to her training with Jim Martin before starting her professional boxing career when she was 21 years old. Martin has held the WBC women’s Jr. Welterweight world championship title and has defended her title seven times, winning them all. She also gained even more fame winning against Deirdre Gogarty, which earned her an appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Over the course of her professional career, Martin has competed in a total of 59 fights, has held 49 wins, 31 wins by KO, 7 losses and 3 draws.
