Harkes was born in Kearny, New Jersey, and he began his career playing youth and high school soccer. While in high school, Harkes played in four New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association championship matches and was named Parade High School Player of the Year and was featured in The Star-Ledger as one of the top ten New Jersey high school soccer players. Harkes went on to play college soccer at the University of Cavaliers and after turning professional, went on to play for teams such as Albany Capitals, Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, West Ham United on loan, D.C. United, Nottingham Forest on loan, New England Revolution, and Columbus Crew. With Sheffield Wednesday, Harkes helped them to win a Football League Cup. With D.C. United, Harkes helped them to win an MLS Cup, U.S. Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, and an MLS Supporters’ Shield. With Columbus Crew, he helped them win a U.S. Open Cup. Harkes also played nationally with the United States. Since retiring, Harkes has become a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. He has been a color commentator for ESPN and has been an assistant manager for the New York Red Bulls and a manager for FC Cincinnati..
