Dr. John La Puma is a physician, celebrity chef, best-selling author, and television host who has hosted the Lifetime series “Chef MD.” La Puma was born in New York City and moved to Santa Barbara, California when he was young. La Puma went on to earn his B.A. in biology from University of California, Santa Barbara before going on to earn his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. From there, he trained in internal medicine at UCLA’s West Los Angeles VA and completed his first postgraduate fellowship for physicians in clinical ethics and general internal medicine at the University of Chicago. While at the University of Chicago, La Puma began working as a Clinical Associate Professor and founded the Luthern General Center for Clinical Ethics. La Puma later graduated in professional cooking from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. La Puma has taught as a professor of nutrition at Kendall College and has also previously cooked with Rick Bayless at Frontera Grill and Topolobampo. La Puma went on to found CHEF Clinic, the Cooking, Healthy Eating and Fitness program that works to prevent and treat obesity, promote wellness, and maintain weight loss. La Puma is also co-founder of ChefMD. As an author, La Puma has published books which include ‘Refuel,’ ‘ChefMD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine,’ and more.
