Bob Behnken is an American NASA astronaut, engineer, and former Chief of the Astronaut Office. Behnken was born in St. Ann, Missouri, and he earned his bachelor of science degrees in mechanical engineering and physics from Washington University in St. Louis before going on to earn his master of science degree in mechanical engineering as well as his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. Before entering graduate school, Behnken became an Air Force ROTC student and after graduating, Behnken entered Air Force active duty where he worked as a technical manager and developmental engineer for new munitions systems. From there, he attended the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School Flight Test Engineer’s course and after graduating, he was assigned to the F-22 Combined Test Force where he was the lead flight test engineer for Raptor 4004. Behnken was then selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA and after 18 months of training and evaluation, he was assigned technical duties in the Astronaut Office Shuttle Operations Branch. He has since served during the NEEMO 11 mission, has been a crew member of the STS-123 mission, was a mission specialist on STS-130, and has been named Chief of the Astronaut Office.
