Matthew Walker is a British scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. Over the course of his career, Walker has done research on the impact of sleep on human health and disease. Walker was born in Liverpool, United Kingdom, and he earned his degree in neuroscience from the University of Nottingham before going on to earn his Ph.D. in neurophysiology from Newcastle University. Walker went on to be a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. While teaching at Harvard, Walker held a typing experiment between two different groups; one in the morning and the other at night. In the experiment he had each group type a series of keys on a computer keyboard as fast as they could; he had the ones who were tested at night have a good nights sleep after the first experiment and they improved significantly after a good nights sleep. Walker is founder and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science which researches diseases and health issues such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes, and more. Walker has been the chief scientific officer at Hello and has been a sleep scientist at Google Life Sciences. He has also published the book ‘Why We Sleep’ and has given a TED Talk entitled, Sleep is Your Superpower..
