Jonathan Sarna is an American professor who is the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History in the department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He is also director of the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program. Sarna was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he was raised in New York City as well as in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Sarna studied at Brandeis University, where he earned his B.A. and M.A. before going on to earn his Ph.D. from Yale University. Sarna has previously been featured in Forward newspaper for being one of the most prominent historians of American Judaism. He has also published the book, ‘American Judaism: A History,’ which earned him the National Jewish Book Award and was featured in Publishers Weekly as the Best Religion Book. As an author, Sarna has also published the books ‘Lincoln and the Jews: A History’ and ‘When General Grant Expelled the Jews.’ Sarna has been a contributor on religion for the Newsweek-Washington Post joint project, On Faith. He has previously served as elected president of the Association for Jewish Studies and has previously earned the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry’s Marshall Sklare Award..
