Joe J. Plumeri is a best-selling author, and CEO who is currently the Vice Chairman of the Board and senior advisor of First Data Corporation. Plumeri was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and he earned his B.A. in History and Education from The College of William & Mary. Upon earning his degree, Plumeri began working as a history teacher at a high school in Pennsylvania and was also a sports coach. From there, Plumeri served in the Army Reserve for six months and went on to enroll at New York Law School but didn’t finish his degree. Plumeri went on to begin working for Carter, Berlind & Weill, which was a brokerage house. During his time there, he was mentored by Sandy Weill and the brokerage Shearson, and was then sold to American Express and Plumeri later on worked his way up to Senior Executive Vice President and director of national sales and marketing. From there, Plumeri became president and managing partner of Shearson Lehman Brothers and then Weill bought back Shearson and merged it into Smith Barney which Plumeri became President of. Plumeri then went on to be CEO and Chairman of Travelers Group’s Primerica Financial Services division and then was CEO of Citibank. After a year at Citibank, Plumeri went on to be CEO and Chairman of Willis and after several years, became senior advisor at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. As an author, Plumeri has published the book “The Power of Being Yourself.”.
