Jane Holl Lute is an American diplomat and security analyst who currently serves as the UN special envoy on the Cyprus dispute. Lute was born in New Jersey, and she graduated with her B.A. from Montclair State University before going on to earn her M.A. from the University of Southern California and earning her Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University and her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University. She is also a member of the Virginia Bar. Lute went on to start her career working as director of European Affairs in the National Security Council staff at the White House. This led to her working on the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict and was also a senior public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Centre for International Scholars. Lute has also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the United Nations Foundation and the Better World Fund and has been Executive Director of the Association of the United States Army’s project on the role of American Military Power. Lute has previously been the 5th United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama.
