Damien Chazelle is a French-American film director, producer, and screenwriter who is best known for his work on films such as “Whiplash,” “La La Land,” and “First Man.” Chazelle was born in Providence, Rhode Island, to a French father and Canadian-American mother. Chazelle was raised in Princeton, New Jersey, and although Chazelle always had a passion for filmmaking, he spent time trying to be a jazz drummer, which later became his inspiration for his film Whiplash. From there, Chazelle went on to study filmmaking in the Visual and Environmental Studies department at Harvard University where he graduated. While studying at Harvard, Chazelle was roommates with Justin Hurwitz and together, the two were in the band Chester French for a time. After graduating, Chazelle started his career writing and directing his debut, “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” which he wrote with Justin Hurwitz as part of their senior thesis project. The film made it’s premiere at Tribeca Film Festival where he earned various awards. Since then, Chazelle has written “The Last Exorcism Part II,” as well as “Grand Piano” and “10 Cloverfield Lane.” He has most recently been director and producer of the television series “The Eddy.”.
