Derreck Kayongo is an entrepreneur, a CNN Hero, founder of the Global Soap Project, and former CEO of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Kayongo was born in Kampala, Uganda, before General Ida Admin Dada seized power. While growing up, Uganda became violent and Kayongo and his family became refugees in Kenya. He later immigrated to the United States to earn his degree. He has gone on to graduate from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Oglethorpe University. As the founder of the Global Soap Project, Kayongo started his idea when he first moved to the United States and found out that hotels wasted the leftover shampoos, conditioners, and soaps that are leftover from guests. Kayongo formed the idea of Global Soap to reprocess the leftover soap and distribute it to countries that are less fortunate and aren’t able to have soap most of the time. The Global Soap Project has gone on collaborate with Clean the World and Kayongo has since stepped down. Kayongo is also a speaker and has given a TED Talk.
