Zia was born in Newark, New Jersey, and she later studied at Princeton Unviersity where she was a student at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. While studying there, she became founder of the Asian American Students Association. She was also an anti-war activist, a feminist, and was active in movements that created cross-racial unity among low-income people of color. After graduating from Princeton, Zia began medical school but left and moved to Detroit, Michigan to work as a laborer and community organizer, which is when she found her love as a writer. Zia has previously been the executive editor of Ms. Magazine and has written for outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, OUT, The Advocate, and more. As an author, some of her books she has authored or co-authored include “My Country Versus Me,” “Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People,” and “Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao’s Revolution.”.
