Judy Shepard is an LGBT-rights activist and Executive Director and Board President of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Judy is the mother of the late Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old that was a student at the University of Wyoming. Matthew was beaten and pistol-whipped in Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later in a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado and the case gained attention country wide as it was known for being one of the most high-profiled hate-crime against the LGBT community. Judy and her husband Dennis went on to create the Matthew Shepard Foundation which is a foundation that helps advance “social justice, diversity awareness and education, and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.” Judy has tried previously to pass the Matthew Shepard Act, which helps to expand federal hate-crimes legislation to include sexual orientation, but at the time she first tried, then President George W. Bush wouldn’t pass it. More recently, Judy again has tried to pass the act with President Barack Obama in office and it has since passed, being named the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
