Michael Sam is a retired American football player and an LGBTQ activist. Sam was born in Galveston, Texas, and he began his career playing football in high school as a defensive end and offensive tackle. He earned first-team All-District honors as a defensive lineman and was considered a two-star college football recruit by Rivals. He received several scholarship offers before taking an offer from the University of Missouri. While playing college football, he competed in the Big 12 Conference as well as in the Southeastern Conference. He had been named SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice, and was also named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team all-SEC selection. Sam has also been named a first-team All-American and also played in the Senior Bowl. Upon graduating, Sam was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams and became the first publicly gay player to be drafted in the NFL. Sam went on to be cut from the Rams during roster cutdowns and played for the Dallas Cowboys practice squad before being waived. From there, Sam played with the Montreal Alouettes for a season with the CFL and was the first publicly gay player to play in the CFL as well. After retiring, Sam has gone on to be an author and motivational speaker.
