Hall earned her B.A. in African-American studies and creative writing from Columbia University where she was awarded with top departmental honors from the Institute for Research in African-American Studies. Hall went on to earn her M.F.A. from the American Repertory Theater’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University before going on to graduate from Julliard School’s Lila Acheson Wallace playwriting program. As a playwright, Hall is known for ‘The Mountaintop,’ which is about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s last night before being assassinated. The Mountaintop went on to win an Olivier award for Best New Play making Hall the first black woman to earn this award. The Mountaintop went on to open on Broadway starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. Some of Hall’s other known plays include ‘Children of Killers,’ ‘Hoodoo Love,’ ‘Saturday Night/Sunday Morning,’ ‘The Hope Well,’ and ‘Hurt Village.’ Hurt Village earned the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was made into a film that Hall directed as well.
