Thelma Golden is a museum director and chief curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York City, New York. Golden grew up in Queens, New York, and while in high school, she began training as a curatorial apprentice at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She went on to earn her B.A. in Art History and African-American Studies from Smith College and while at Smith College, she put on exhibitions for the Smith College Museum of Art. While earning her degree, Golden also began working as an intern at The Studio Museum and after earning her degree she began working a curatorial position. From there, she became a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art and then was a visual arts director at the Jamaica Arts Center in Queens before working as director of Whitney Museum’s outpost. Exhibits that Golden has organized over the years include Biennial, Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Art, Bob Thompson: A Retrospective, and more. With the Studio Museum, Golden has organized numerous exhibits some of which include Vagabondia, The Cane Project, Stranger, Afro Museum, and Frequency. Golden has previously given a TED talk called “How Art Gives Shape to Cultural Change.” She has served on several boards and has been appointed to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House.
