Peniel E. Joseph is an American historian, scholar, teacher, and activist who talks on race issues. Joseph holds professorship at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the History Department in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. Joseph was born and raised in New York and he went on to earn his B.A. in Africana Studies and European History from the State University of New York before going on to earn his Ph.D. in American History from Temple University. Joseph has been the founder of the Black Power Studies subfield of American History and American Civil Rights History, which teaches on Africana studies, law and society as well as women’s and ethnic studies and political studies. Joseph has been author of books such as “Waiting ‘Til the Midnight Hour,” “Dark Days, Bright Nights,” “Stokely,” “The Black Power Movement,” and “Neighborhood Rebels.” He has also contributed essays to outlets such as The Chronicle Review, The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, and more.
