Lee Elder is a retired American professional golfer who is best known for being the first African-American to play in the Masters Tournament which he was invited into after winning the Monsanto Open. Elder was born in Dallas, Texas, and when he was only 9 years old his father died in World War II and only three months later, his mother passed away as well. After being moved around for several years, Elder moved to Los Angeles, California, to live with his aunt. While there, he found his interest in golf and began working as a caddie before pursuing a golf career at 16 after dropping out of high school. Elder later began learning from Ted Rhodes who helped him to play in tournaments. Shortly after, Elder was drafted into the Army and while in the Army, he was under the command of John Gleaster who was also a golfer and helped him play while in the Army. After being discharged, Elder joined the United Golf Association Tour for black players where he won 18 tournaments. He later attended a qualifying school for the PGA Tour and after joining the PGA Tour he had four professional wins. He also had eight senior PGA wins, two Japan Senior wins, won the Nigerian Open and Jamaica Open..
