Charles S. Dutton is an American actor, director, and producer who is best known for playing Roc Emerson in the television series “Roc,” and for playing Boy Willie in the television film “The Piano Lesson,” a role which earned him a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination. Dutton was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and while growing up he spent a short time fighting as an amateur boxer with the name Roc. When Dutton was 16 years old, he ended up in a knife fight that led to a death of a man. Dutton pleaded guilty to manslaughter and served five years in prison but was on parole before 2 years were up. Shortly after, he was arrested again on robbery and handgun charges for punching a white man. While in prison for the second time, Dutton became interested in the Black Panther Party as well as acting. He then earned his GED and earned his A.A. from Hagerstown Community College. After being released from prison, Dutton went on to get his B.A. from Towson University and then earned his master’s in acting from the Yale School of Drama. From there, Dutton made his debut on Broadway in the production of ‘MA Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ which earned him a Tony Award nomination. From there, he made his television debut in “Miami Vice,” and since then, his television credits have gone on to include playing J.T. in “Threshold,” Detective Fales in series “Longmire,” and Father Mickle in series “Zero Hour.” His film credits include “Crocodile Dundee II,” “Alien 3,” “A Time to Kill,” “Gothika,” and more..
