Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr. is an African-American civil rights leader who has previously served as the Executive Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and who is known for being an assistant to Martin Luther King Jr. Chavis was born in Oxford, North Carolina, and when he was 12 years old, he became the first African American to earn a library card for the public library. He went on to earn his B.A. in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and went on to work in the civil rights movement where he led a march to the state capital. He was also a leader of the Wilmington Ten which were activists who were convicted of committing arson during a civil rights protest. This led to Chavis being sentenced to 34 years but he only served two years after the convictions and sentences were appealed. After being released, Chavis went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Duke University, as well as his Doctor of Ministry from Howard University. Chavis has previously been the Vice President of the National Council of Churches, has been the National Director of the Million Man March, the founder and CEO of the National African American Leadership Summit, and CEO and co-chairman of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network. He has also been interim president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association..
