Ashley Park is an American actor, dancer, and singer, who is best known for playing Tuptim in the Broadway production of ‘The King and I,’ and for originating the role of Gretchen Wieners in the musical ‘Mean Girls,’ which earned her a Tony Award nomination. Park was born in Glendale, California, and she grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Park began taking dance lessons at 3 years old and then piano lessons at 5 years old. Park then began acting in a local community kids theatre and also went to the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. While in high school she also performed in theatre and choir and co-founded the women’s a cappella group which went on to place second at a national competition. At only 15 years old Park was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and she made a Make-A-Wish to see some Broadway productions with her family in New York City. After taking chemotherapy, she went back to high school and later earned her BFA in musical theatre from the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater, and Dance. During this time she also co-founded the Michigan Performance Outreach Workshop. Park’s theatre credits over the years have gone on to include ‘Jesus Christ Superstar,’ ‘The Sound of Music,’ ‘Mamma Mia!,’ ‘Lady in the Dark,’ and more. On screen, Park has acted in television series which include “Nightcap,” “Tales of the City,” and “Emily in Paris.”.
