Ethan Russell is a multiple Grammy nominated photographer, director, and author who is known for being the first rock ‘n’ roll photographer who has captured some of the greatest rock bands in the course of history. He is also known for being the only rock photographer who has photographed album covers for legendary bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. Russell was born in Mt. Kisco, New York, and he moved to California at a young age where he went on to earn his degree in English and art at the University of California, Davis. While studying at UC Davis, Russell found his passion for photography but didn’t start working in photography until he traveled through England later on in life. Russell was originally living in London to pursue a writing career but ended up finding himself exceling in photography after photographing Mick Jagger and then John Lennon. From there, he was hired to be the photographer for The Rolling Stones American Tour which led him to photograph The Beatles’ cover of “Let It Be.” He then caught the attention of The Who and he photographed their cover of “Who’s Next.” Other rock artists that Russell has photographed over the years include The Eagles, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and more. He has since also worked in the music video industry and has released two books; “Dear Mr. Fantasy: Diary of a Decade: Our Time and Rock and Roll,” and “Let It Bleed: The Rolling Stones 1969 Tour.”.
