Briles was born in Rule, Texas, and began playing football at his high school where he earned all-state honors and accepted a scholarship to play at University of Houston where he later transferred to Texas Tech University where he earned his B.A. Briles has also earned his master’s degree in education from Abilene Christian University before he began his career in coaching. Briles began working as an assistant coach at Sundown High School in Texas and after one year, he began working as an assistant coach at Sweetwater High School. Briles has gone on to work as a head coach of Hamlin High School, Georgetown High School, Stephenville High School, Texas Tech, University of Houston, Baylor University, and Estra Guelfi. As a coach, Briles has won two Big 12 championships with Baylor, has won one C-USA with University of Houston, and two C-USA West Divisions with University of Houston. Briles has been awarded with the Big 12 Coach of the Year and has also been awarded with the AP College Football Coach of the Year. Apart from his career as a coach, Briles has also been author of “Beating Goliath” and “Looking Up.”.
