Sandberg was born in Spokane, Washington, and he began his career playing baseball in high school where he was named to Parade Magazine’s High School All-American football team. He then went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies after being selected in the baseball amateur draft. Sandberg spent a year playing with the Philadelphia Phillies before going on to spend the rest of his career playing baseball with the Chicago Cubs.
