Swinney was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and he began his career playing college football at the University of Alabama where he was part of the National Championship team, was named an Academic All-SEC twice, and was a member of the SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in commerce and business administration before going on to earn his master’s in business administration. While earning his MBA, Swinney began working as a graduate assistant for the University of Alabama. He then began working with Alabama as the wide receivers and tight ends coach over the course of four years. He then began working at Clemson University as a wide receivers coach and since then, has worked his way up to interim head coach and offensive coordinator, until he began his work as a head coach.
