Hilfiger was born in Elmira, New York, and he began his career working in a clothing store where he saved 150 dollars and went on to open his first clothing store, People’s Place, which was located in Elmira. While working there, he began sketching his own designs which is when he knew he wanted to be a designer instead. The company then went public and after three years, Hilfiger was named Menswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Shortly after, the company also began releasing women’s clothing and from there, they opened their first store in Beverly Hills and then followed that with a store in London.
