Matthew Whitaker is an American jazz pianist who is known for being blind since birth. Whitaker was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, and was born three month prematurely, which resulted in him being diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, which caused him to go permanently blind. By the time he was three years old, Whitaker was gifted a toy piano and he had played the song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” just by ear. By the time he was five years old, Whitaker began taking piano lessons at The Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School in New York for the blind and visually impaired. Later in life he also began studying at The Harlem School of the Arts where he also learned how to play the organ, bass guitar, clarinet, and different percussion instruments. Whitaker also studied at The Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College Jazz program. Since then, Whitaker has gone on to release his debut album, “Outta the Box,” which features artists which include Will Calhoun, Sammy Figueroa, Dave Stryker, James Carter, and Christian McBride.
