Schwall was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and he began his career originally played basketball at the University of Oklahoma where he was an All-Big Eight basketball star before going on to sign with the Boston Red Sox in the MLB. Schwall went on to play for the Boston Red Sox for a year where he was named an All-Star and AL Rookie of the Year. After playing with the Red Sox, Schwall went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates for three years before being traded to the Atlanta Braves where he palyed for a year before retiring from the MLB. Schwall finished his professional career with a 49-48 win-loss record, a 3.72 earned run average, and with 408 strikeouts.
