Lloyd was born in Miami, Florida, and he began his career playing football in high school before going on to play college football at Fort Valley State University where he was a three-time All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, a three-time team Defensive MVP, SIAC Player of the Year, and a first-team Sheridan All-American selection. After finishing his college career, Lloyd Sr. went on to be selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lloyd Sr. spent almost the entirety of his professional career playing with the Steelers and during his time there he was a two-time Pittsburgh Steelers Team MVP, a UPI AFC Defensive Player of the Year, KCC 101 AFC Defensive Player of the Year, a three-time first-team All-Pro, and a five-time Pro Bowl selection. After playing for the Steelers for 9 years, Lloyd Sr. went on to play one season with the Carolina Panthers. He finished his NFL career with 397 total tackles, 54.5 sacks, 24 forced fumbles, 12 fumble recoveries and 11 interceptions..
