Varvatos was born in Detroit, Michigan, and he began his career selling mens clothing at a Hughes & Hatcher store in Dearborn. He went on to study at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan and after earning his degree, he co-founded the menswear store, Fitzgerald’s Men’s Store, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. From there, Varvatos went on to work for Polo Ralph Lauren and then Calvin Klein. During his time at Calvin Klein, Varvatos was head of menswear design and was behind the launch of the men’s collection as well as the cK brand. He also helped make boxer briefs at Calvin Klein which became famous by print ads by Mark Wahlberg. After leaving Calvin Klein, Varvatos set off to create his own company which led to him debuting his first clothing line in New York which has gone on to grow into a company that also sells accessories, footwear, eyewear, and fragrances..
