Leonhard was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, and he began his career playing football in high school where he was a quarterback and safety. Leonhard went on to play college football at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a three-time All-American, three-time first team All-Big Ten, and a CNN/SI All-American.
