Carney was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and he began his career playing football in high school where he earned All-State honors as a punter. He went on to play college football at the University of Notre Dame where he was named to the all-time team by Sports Illustrated. Carney went on to be signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL but didn’t play in season with them and went on to play with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over the course of his professional career Carney went on to play for teams which include the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, and the New York Giants. Over the course of his career he was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, a first-team All-Pro, a second-team All-Pro, an NEA All-Pro, and was a Super Bowl champion during his time with the Saints.
