Bunting was born in Portland, Maine, and he began his career playing football in high school where he was a linebacker, earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, and helped the school win their first ACC title. He went on to then begin playing in the NFL after being signed to the Philadelphia Eagles, where during this time he played in the Super Bowl. After playing with the Eagles for 10 years, Bunting went on to play with the Philadelphia Stars of the United States Football League for two seasons. After retiring as a football player, Bunting began coaching as a linebacker for the Baltimore Stars.
