Stepnoski was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, and he began his career playing football in high school where he was an All-State and Parade All-American offensive tackle. He went on to play college football at the University of Pittsburgh where he was a third team All-American, a first team All-American, a two-time Academic All-American, a player in the East-West Shrine Game, and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy. He went on to be selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. Over the course of his career, Stepnoski went on to play for the Houston/Tennessee Oilers as well as the Dallas Cowboys for a second time.
