Haben Girma is an American lawyer and disability rights advocate who is best known for being the first graduate to be blind and deaf from Harvard Law School. Girma was born in Oakland, California, and she lost her vision as well as her hearing at a young age. While growing up, she benefited from the Americans with Disabilities Act and also used a digital Braille device. When Girma was 15 years old, she did volunteer work, building schools with buildOn in Mali, Africa. She later went on to study at Lewis & Clark College where she graduated magna cum laude before going on to earn her J.D. from Harvard Law School. Girma has gone on to be named a White House Champion of Change by President Obama, has earned the Helen Keller Achievement Award, has been featured in Forbes 30 Under 30’s list of Law & Policy, and has been featured in Pacific Standard’s Top 30 Thinkers Under 30. Girma has recently published her memoir entitled, “Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law.” Girma has previously joined the Disability Rights Advocates in Berkeley, California as a Skadden Fellow and has more previously worked there as a staff attorney.
