Gerard ‘t Hooft is a Dutch Nobel Prize Winner theoretical physicist and a professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Hooft was born in Den Helder, Netherlands, and he came from a family of scientists which led him to grow a love for science at a young age. After finishing his high school work, Hooft began studying physics at Utrecht University. While studying there, he found he wanted to study on theoretical physics and studied the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly. While working on his doctoral research, he went on to develop the technique of dimensional regularization and renormalized massless Yang-Mills fields. His work led him to find that Yang-Mills couldn’t be renormalized which led him to earn a Nobel Prize in Physics alongside his partner Veltman. After earning his Ph.D., Hooft went on to work as a fellow at CERN in Geneva. He later went on to go back to Utrecht to become an assistant professor and then also held a position as a Morris Loeb lecturer at Harvard. Hooft has also been editor-in-chief for Foundations of Physics. Hooft has also published works which include ‘Playing with Planets,’ ‘In Search of the Ultimate Building Blocks,’ and ‘Time in Powers of Ten.’.
