Steve Mann is a Canadian engineer, professor, and inventor, who is known for specializing in augmented reality, computational photography, and high dynamic range imaging. He is the founding member of the IEEE Council on Extended Intelligence and is co-founder of InteraXon. He has also been co-founder and CTO of Blueberry X Technologies and is chairman of MannLab. Mann was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and he earned his B.Sc., B.Eng., and M.Eng. from McMaster University before going on to earn his Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While studying at MIT, Mann found his inspiration for which founded the Wearable Computing group at the Media Lab. He has since gone on to be a professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto and is also a Professional Engineer through Professional Engineers Ontario. Through his work with science, Mann has made inventions and ideas which include the Chirplet transform, high-dynamic-range imaging, scratch input, natural user interface, Telepointer and SixthSense, and more. He has also been an author of numerous publications which include ‘Intelligent Image Processing,’ and “Cyborg: Digital Destiny and Human Possibility in the Age of the Wearable Computer.’.
