Kishore Mahbubani is a Singaporean civil servant, diplomat, and academic who is a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, at the National University of Singapore. Mahbubani was born in Singapore and earned his B.A. with first class honors in philosophy from the University of Singapore before going on to earn both his M.A. in philosophy and his honorary Ph.D. from Dalhousie University. After finishing his degrees, Mahbubani went on to begin working as a foreign service offer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he worked in the United States, Cambodia, and Malaysia. He then worked his way up to Permanent Secretary and then was Singapore’s Permanent Representative for the United Nations where he was also President of the United Nations Security Council. As an academic, Mahbubani has previously been Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore as well as Professor in the Practice of Public Policy. He has also previously been a fellow at Harvard University and has served on the board the International Advisory Council at Bocconi.
