Carlos Mesa is a Bolivian historian and politician who has previously served as the 63rd President of Bolivia. Mesa was born in La Paz, Bolivia, and he has studied literature at the Las Universidades Complutense de Madrid before going on to study political science at the University of Madrid. After finishing his degree, he moved back to La Paz where he joined the Language and Literature Department at the University of San Andreas. He has also previously began his career working as a journalist on the radio in La Paz where he developed the programs Mendez and Metropolitana. Moving towards politics, Mesa became picked as the running mate for Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, who was the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement candidate during the Presidency. Lozada went on to become the 37th Vice President of Bolivia after Lozada won and shortly after, there were tons of protests and strikes which was known as the Bolivian Gas War. About a year later, Lozada resigned and moved to the United States which then led Mesa to be the assumed President of Bolivia. During his Presidency, Mesa organization a gas referendum, but it became impossible to implement. He then went on to resign, but his offer was rejected. He then resigned a second time, with his offer being accepted. Since then, Mesa has joined the Revolutionary Left Front and has ran for President. He is currently a member of the Inter-American Dialogue and has previously ran for the Civic Community twice..
