Edmund Phelps is an American economist who has previously earned the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Phelps was born in Evanston, Illinois, and he has previously earned his BA at Amherst before going on to earn his graduates as well as his Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University. He then went on to begin his career working as an economist for the RAND Corporation. After working a short time at RAND, Phelps went back to focus on academics and he then began working as a researcher for the Cowles Foundation while also teaching at Yale. His researched focused on the neoclassical growth theory and he went on to publish the Golden Rules savings rate. After working for Yale for a while, Phelps went on to begin working as a professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Since working with the University of Pennsylvania, Phelps has gone on to work for Columbia University as the McVickar Professor of Political Economy. He has since been known for his work with microfoundation and has also been known for his development of the natural rate of unemployment.
