Cathy O’Dowd is a South African adventurer, author, and motivational speaker who is best known for being the first ever woman to reach to top of both the south and north sides of Mount Everest. O’Dowd grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa, and began climbing while studying to earn her master’s in media studies at Rhodes University. Her first mountain expedition was climbing Ruwenzori. She then went on to apply for a spot on the First South African Everest Expedition where she went on to climb the Southeast ridge of Mount Everest. During this expedition, eight climbers died in a blizzard but ended up reaching the summit. After becoming successful at climbing the south end, O’Dowd went on to attempt to climb the north ridge where she came across another climber that had passed out before going on to try to help her. O’Dowd had to go on and ended up making it to the top, becoming the first woman to earn the accomplishment of climbing both ends. She has since unsuccessfully tried to climb a new route up to Mount Everest.
