Nilles began his career entering the U.S. Air Force where he was a lieutenant who then served at Wright Air Development Center where he was a manager of several different electronic development projects. During this time he also began working as a consultant for Kennedy and Johnson’s Science Advisory Council and was also a consultant for the National Science Foundation.
