Neil was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and he went on to study at the University of Glasgow where he first got into journalism as he edited the student newspaper and also helped with the student television. He then also became editor-in-chief of the Barclay brother’s Press Holdings newspapers and has previously been Lord Rector of the University of St Andrews.
