Shuji Nakamura is an American electronic engineer and inventor who is known for specializing in semiconductor technology and who works as the professor for the Materials Department of the College of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Nakamura was born in Ikata, Ehime, Japan, and he earned his B.Eng. degree in electronic engineering from the University of Tokushima before going on to earn his M.Eng. degree. He then went on to begin working for Nichia Corporation where he invented the first nitride-based LED which was blue and green. He then went on to develop a nitride-based violet laser. Nakamura then went on to set out to work a GaN LED and later earned the support of Nobuo Ogawa to support the project. After a while, the project had to be shut down due to it costing too much money but Nakamura eventually finished the device on his own. He later left his job at Nichia Corporation and began working as professor of engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
